Job Description

The Department of Technology, Culture, and Society at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering invites applications for a full time, non-tenured, renewable faculty position in Integrated Digital Media, at the rank of Industry Assistant Professor, with a start date of September 1, 2019. New York University (NYU) is one of the top private universities in the United States, and the Tandon School of Engineering has the distinct history of having been known previously as Brooklyn Poly and the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering.

The mission of the NYU Tandon School of Engineering is to excel in research, teaching and entrepreneurship. We aim to inspire and educate engineers for the 21st century. We are committed to quality, integrity, and respect for each other. We take pride in our high numbers of women students and students who are the first in their family to go to college. We seek faculty who have a real passion for a culturally diverse environment. Tandon belongs to the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC), which assists with dual-career searches.

The Integrated Digital Media (IDM) program in the Tandon School of Engineering is a place that fosters creative practice, design research and multidisciplinary experimentation with emerging media technologies. Situated on NYU’s Brooklyn campus and with access to a world-class facility at the NYU Media and Games Network (MAGNET), IDM nurtures our students’ expertise through experimental creative practice, technical acumen, and rigorous process. We use technologies to support human values and interdependence, building a field of practice that combines the ethics of an arts practice with the technical rigor of engineering.

We seek candidates for this position with a disciplinary focus in design and visual communication. You should be working in visual design fields (graphic design, print and publishing, typography), critical design research, data journalism, information design, persuasive design, or another relevant field. You should be an excellent teacher with a strong commitment to student mentorship and experience in all levels of teaching, from introductory undergraduates to graduate students. You must have a terminal degree in digital media or a related field and an outstanding record of artistic practice, technical innovation, and/or scholarship in your areas of focus. We especially seek faculty colleagues who have a hybrid academic background (e.g., degrees in engineering and arts, humanities, or design), and whose work is concerned with themes of advocacy /activism, social/civic engagement, cultural/environmental sustainability, design justice, and/or media equity.

You should submit:

Cover letter
Current CV that points to an online portfolio of work
Recent teaching evaluations
A teaching statement describing experience and teaching philosophy
Names and contact information for three references.

Please submit all application materials electronically at:

Consideration of applications will begin on February 15, 2019 and continue until the position is filled; we encourage you to submit early
