Application Deadline: January 14, 2019

Job Description

The Institute of Biomedicine at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

The Institute is composed of the following five departments:
• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Pathology and Genetics
• The Department of Clinical Chemistry and Transfusion Medicine
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology

At present, the institute has about 380 employees and approximately 400 million SEK in total assets.

Subject area: Immuno-oncology

Subject area description:
A post-doctoral position is open in the Raghavan laboratory, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Institute of Biomedicine (Raghavan Lab). The project aims to understand mechanisms leading to tumor regression or resistance in patients with non-small cell lung cancer undergoing immune therapy. The project consists of 2 arms of investigation (1) with the help of flow cytometry and advanced immunological methods, immune cell populations in the circulation will be identified in patients undergoing immune therapy and will be correlated to the clinical response. And (2) using DNA isolated from archival tumor and normal tissue, the tumor mutation burden will be mapped and again correlated to the clinical outcome and the immune cell phenotype in the blood. The project also includes establishing methods for sequencing circulating tumor DNA isolated from the patient blood after each treatment cycle. The data will result in the discovery of key biomarkers predicting response to immune therapy or resistance in the patients with stage III and IV non-small lung cancer and undergoing immune therapy. The project is an ongoing collaboration with clinicians at the Sahlgrenska University hospital.

Job assignment: We seek a postdoctoral fellow, experienced in the field of cancer immune therapy.
The postdoctoral project consists of research, teaching and supervision.

- The candidate must hold a PhD degree in the field of immunology or tumor biology
- Original first author articles in internationally renowned peer-reviewed journals.
- A strong background in immunology and particularly in tumor immunology
- Documented experience in bioinformatics data analysis is a merit

The aim of the position is to give an opportunity for post-doctoral training to newly graduated students, so only those who have a doctoral degree awarded latest December 2016 should apply for the position.

Type of scholarship
