General Information:

The Department of Computer Science at James Madison University invites applications for a visiting faculty position at the rank of Instructor to support the new Information Technology program. The position will begin August 2024, is a one-year appointment and may be eligible to renew for a second year.

Information Technology (IT) is a new major in the Department of Computer Science, with a focus on computer networking, cyber security, web technologies, data science/machine learning and mobile development. The IT major accepted our first freshman class in fall 2022 and has more than 170+ majors and is rapidly growing. The JMU Computer Science department is a dynamic and supportive community with 28 full-time faculty members and approximately 1,000 computer science and information technology undergraduate majors. We also offer an online M.S. Degree in Computer Science – concentration in Cyber Security. We are dedicated to maintaining a culture that balances excellence in teaching and small class sizes with opportunities for faculty and student research. We have many active clubs and organizations including Women in Technology, Robotics, Forensics, Cyber Defense, and a student ACM chapter. We are committed to creating and supporting an inclusive work and educational community, and are interested in candidates whose experience and qualifications support a commitment to this core quality. Duties and Responsibilities:

While this role is primarily focused on teaching, the department is home to an active community of scholars. Interested applicants will have the opportunity to pursue research activities and professional development.

 

Qualifications:

A Doctorate (Ph.D., D.Sc., etc.) or ABD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology or a closely related field at the time of employment is preferred for this position. Applicants with a Master of Science degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology or a closely related field with commensurate experience will be considered.

We are interested in applicants from all areas of specialization. We are especially interested in candidates with a background in Web Technologies, Machine Learning, Database Systems, and Web and Mobile Development. Other areas will be considered. Preference will be given to applicants who can provide high quality teaching at the undergraduate level with the potential to develop and sustain an active, undergraduate-oriented research program. We are also interested in candidates with experience and/or interest in contributing to on-going efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within the discipline.
