Overview

Saint Mary's College seeks to hire a per-course adjunct faculty member to teach KINES 400: Sport Sociology in the traditional undergraduate Kinesiology program in Fall 2024. This course will be taught in person, on campus.

Mondays & Wednesdays, 1:30pm-2:45pm

The Kinesiology major is a four-year course of study leading to either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science depending on the student's area of interest. The major requires rigorous study of the human being in motion. We examine the whole person—anatomically, physiologically, biomechanically, psychologically, sociologically, and historically—across the lifespan. Our domains are health, sport, and physical activity. Students select one area within which to study: Sport and Recreation Management (Bachelor of Arts), Health Promotion (Bachelor of Arts), or Exercise Science (Bachelor of Science).

Responsibilities

Sport Sociology examines the contemporary issues in sport and physical activity from a sociological perspective. Students will explore current sociological theories/paradigms, research techniques and analyze empirical research in sociology, education and related fields while focusing on the social and cultural structures, patterns and organizations associated with sport. Topics include the in-depth study of sport as it relates to: the socialization process, racial and gender equity, upward social mobility, politics, economics, and our educational system in North America.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Identify various sociological perspectives and explain how they shape thinking about complex social issues; Examine complex social issues from at least three different sociological perspectives; Demonstrate knowledge of and critically analyze empirical research in sociology; Utilize three different sociological research techniques; Articulate the historical underpinnings of selected contemporary issues in physical activity; Apply what was learned in class to their own sport/physical activity experience; Integrate theory and research with practical strategies for positive social change; Demonstrate strong communication skills (both verbal and written); Arrange materials for a resource file that can be used for lifelong learning on these topics.


Qualifications:
The successful candidate will preferably hold a terminal degree in Kinesiology or a closely related field. Demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate level as evidenced by recent course evaluations is strongly preferred. Candidates should be comfortable supporting and working in a multi-cultural environment.

Candidates must reside in California.

The salary is $7,447 - $10,008 depending on qualifications. The salary range for this position is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here.
